Homemade Carp Boilies With The Best Big Fish Bait Ingredients!

By Tim Richardson

When catching more big carp is your goal it is vital you understand as much as possible about your fish and how they detect bait substances and how to use them to ensure fish want your baits again and again exploiting their own senses and behaviours against them to make them much easier to catch! It seems that when it comes to asking questions about bait, the majority of carp anglers today begin with questions about flavours, ingredients and so on without considering the fact that the true power is in understanding what carp are most sensitive to and why, and how to exploit this knowledge in bait-making to maximum effects! When you realise how much potential power you have over less knowledgeable more ignorant anglers by understanding vital aspects of fish senses, behaviours, substances sensitivities and so on, the ways you choose your baits and bait ingredients will never be the same again!

To begin with, when thinking about bait, why begin with the bait itself? Why not begin with the fish and what they are most sensitive to? When you know and understand what fish are sensitive to you have so much power over them. You can manipulate bait substances and exploit (and even condition) various fish senses against them to make them easier to catch!

The majority of carp anglers in the UK and some other countries where carp fishing has become so commercialised, are dependant on expensive readymade carp boilies, pellets etc. You could say that the bait companies just want that trend to continue so they can extract as much money out of you as possible - after all, making customers dependant on products is one of the prime goals of those wanting to make big money but that gives them a huge amount of power over you which perhaps not too many of us can afford these days! When the price of readymade baits is the deciding factor in being able to afford to catch a few fish or even go fishing, you have to begin to wonder about making your own bait at vastly less cost with the chance to catch even more fish using your own baits with all the enormous satisfaction that brings!

Everyone has different limits in terms of their fishing resources so why let someone else fix what you spend on bait by them deciding the cost of their readymade baits when making your own is much more economical and affordable and just as productive if not even more so?! It is very easy to make certain that your own potently productive baits cost less than readymade baits. You need to have the knowledge to make sure that your cheap baits are potent in certain ways that guarantee success, and again this comes from having the right sufficient fish and bait knowledge to ask the right questions to keep on making your own totally reliably consistently successful baits!

So what kind of mistakes do beginners in bait-making do that can be avoided? Personally I have found that well over 80 percent of my own homemade readymade baits catch fish right from the first cast on a range of waters, (this has been over a period of 31 years.) Some waters really do require more specially designed baits for various reasons including the need to out-compete other baits or to avoid using bait ingredients and substances used previously, perhaps in many readymade baits, that fish are now feed too cautiously on or will avoid completely due to fear of being hooked!

Bait-making beginners usually make the most common mistake of falling into the trap of thinking like an angler and relying on personal judgements and opinions about bait substances and flavours to formulate baits instead of starting off with the fish themselves (which is obviously where the true power is!) Avoid limiting your bait success by getting to know your fish very well indeed inside and out! By focussing on the fish in the first instance and not on bait substances you will be thinking like a carp and be able to get the edge over the majority who merely think like anglers.

Many very effective bait substances appear not to initiate a response from carp when applied to water on their own, but applied in combination with other substances very definitely have powerful effects in either many obvious or just as often much more hidden more subtle internal ways that work over a period of time after baits have been eaten! Many bait substances are not even used to trigger feeding or to attract fish directly but can make baits more noticeable to fish or more palatable or make them much more habit-forming! I laugh when anglers refer to their favourite flavours in terms of describing their baits because it is often baits that smell of nothing discernible to us humans that can be the most productive for big wary fish!

Carp are such highly evolved creatures able to adapt sensitivity to substances, sense completely new substances in water, identify new food sources and monopolise them to their own benefit. You can condition and train carp just the same as dogs by repetition of positive rewards (using new and thus safer baits.) The carp bait substances you choose literally manipulate their behaviours as they influence which hormones production which forms of physical actions; for instance the filter feeding on dissolved bait substances, or movement towards baited areas following concentration gradients, or intensive competitive feeding and repeated bait consumption.
